You are brave to be willing to state your love for the Lord and the unwavering belief that the Mormon Church is the only true church established by our Savior and restored by the Prophet Joseph Smith. I believe that is what it means to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. We need more people like you. Our stories need to be shared and spread to the world. My grandson is in Mongolia (who would have thought) doing just that for the next two years.I loved the chapter on Polygamy which has always been my belief in monogamy. I'm not so sure about the Coming Revolution Inside Mormonism as I don't see in Utah what you might be seeing in California. (I'm not a native.) Anyway, your book was not really about that, in my opinion. The best thing about your book was that it was personal. You weren't afraid to disclose yourself. That is always a good read, especially when many of the Church books are about changing ourselves which you seem to have already accomplished (I realize you are not yet perfect as none of us are). Keep up the good work. Thanks for writing the book.

Music is present in all of life's events, highs and lows, and takes part in the "Grand Harmony." For some unexplained reason, Miguel, a boy the narrator is drawn to, is forbidden to play music. He secretly practices on a makeshift guitar while his family joyfully make shoes. Noticing the colorless void that plagues Miguel when there is no music, La Música engineers a genius plan involving mariachis, a mischievous dog, and a broken guitar to make the boy's dream to play the music in his heart come true. The character Mamá Coco is referenced throughout (the mariachis are shushed by Miguel's grandmother so they don't upset Mamá Coco), and this book ties into the plot of Pixar's Coco , but knowledge of the film isn't necessary to understand the work's celebration of music, creativity, and family. Ramírez's lively and vivid art captures the frenetic flow and the languid and exultant surge that music inspires. A candy-colored palette of oranges, purples, blues, greens, and reds depict varied settings, from a Mexican village square to quiet spaces of contemplation. Matt de la Peña is the New York Times bestselling, Newbery Medal winning author of six young adult novels (including Mexican WhiteBoy, The Living and The Hunted) and two picture books (A Nations Hope and Last Stop on Market Street). Matt received his MFA in creative writing from San Diego State University and his BA from the University of the Pacific, where he attended school on a full athletic scholarship for basketball. de la Peña currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his family. Matt de la Pena is a genius. This is such a beautiful book! If you thought the movie was good, you will be pleasantly surprised that this book is even BETTER! This one will be in the family for generations to come along with all of Matt's other books. If you have not heard of him, check out anything he has written. You will not be disappointed!

We saw the movie, and our daughter fell in love. She got this book for Christmas, and we've read it every night since then. The story is a modified version of the movie plot, but still wonderful... and the illustrations are fantastic.

Great book for any Coco fan or music lover. My 2 year old son loves it! The artwork is great as well.If you loved the movie, this short story tells of how Miguel found the guitar he uses in the attic.

Beautifully illustrated storybook. Highly recommend.

All opinions are my own.Where there is music, there is color.And where this color, there is life.Miguel and the Grand Harmony by Matt de la Pena is full of color, music, and life. Told from the perspective of music personified, the reader has the opportunity to see and feel the impact of music in the lives of those who make it, listen to it, and try to resist it.The music of this story is drawn to a boy, Miguel, who is told to resist Music’s draw. The reader watches as the Music leads Miguel to his destiny and ultimately enriches not only his world, but the world of those around him.The details and color of the text and illustrations make for a book that is to be read again and again. It easily has a role as a read aloud in a music classroom but also in an ELA classroom as a mentor text showing personification.Recommended for ages 5 and up.

This book is lovely. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is wonderful and heartfelt. It might not make a whole lot of sense if you haven't seen the movie, though.If you have seen the movie, however, this book is basically a prequel to it, showing how Miguel got his guitar. (It also briefly touches on another character, but I won't spoil that one for you.) I'm a huge fan of the movie myself and was interested in seeing if this book would add any more insight into the movie's story, and was not disappointed. If you'll forgive the internet speak, it will give you "a lot of feels."I'm not sure I would recommend it to very young readers (probably no-one under the age of 5) since the narration might go a bit over their heads. It''s a tad artsy in places, and it's told from the perspective of "La Musica"--sort of a spirit of music, which tiny kids might have a hard time grasping. But if you're a parent and you're reading this, you probably know what your kid is able to understand, so I'll let you make that judgment.If you're like me and you loved this movie though, I highly recommend this book. And if your kid liked the movie, I'd recommend it to them, too.
